In fact, during a single ¼ mile run, each car can use up to 15 gallons of race fuel. Obviously, such an impressive car must consume fuel like a Saturn 5 rocket, right? Well, yes. Let’s all just stop for a moment and appreciate the fact that these cars can reach 330mph – that’s over 530kph – in less than 3.7 seconds and within the space of a ¼ mile (400m).
Thanks to such a massive engine, a Top Fuel Dragster can complete the ¼ mile in less than 3.7 seconds reaching a top speed of 330mph. The torque figure is just as high at around 10,000 N.m. These engines are supercharged and are capable of producing an utterly ridiculous 11,000hp, although it is more common to find engines putting out a comparably measly 8,500 to 10,000hp.
The Top Fuel category cars are powered by highly modified engines using the layout of the Chrysler 426 Hemi – also known as the “Elephant Engine”.
